Bear Hunting: The First of Maine's Fall Seasons
For many hunters, bear season marks the start of Maine's fall hunting traditions. Opening in late August, it offers a chance to get back into the woods, enjoy mild weather, and experience one of Maine's most unique hunting opportunities.
Whether you're new to hunting or have years of experience, bear hunting is a great way to spend time outdoors with family and friends while getting a head start on the fall season.
Bear hunting also plays an important role in wildlife management. Maine is home to the largest black bear population in the eastern United States, and regulated hunting helps keep bear numbers in balance with available habitat and food resources.
And for those fortunate enough to harvest a bear, properly handled bear meat provides a flavorful, nutritious source of locally harvested protein that can be enjoyed year-round.

This year, junior hunters with a valid junior hunting license (or lifetime license) have two dedicated days to hunt bear before the regular season gets underway—Friday & Saturday, August 28–29, 2026.
Youth Bear Hunting Days are a great opportunity to mentor a young hunter, share your knowledge and experience, and help them build a lifelong connection to Maine's outdoors and wildlife. Whether it's their first hunt or another step in their hunting journey, time in the field together can create memories that last a lifetime.
