For many Maine hunters, fall is a time to fill the freezer and put nutritious, locally harvested meat on the table. If you find yourself with more than you need, consider sharing your harvest with someone in your community through Maine’s Hunters for the Hungry program.
Whether you have extra venison to share, an antlerless permit you’d like to put to use, or simply want to help make a difference, your harvest can provide a valuable source of protein for Maine families. The program accepts deer, moose, and bear meat, making it easy to turn a successful hunt into an opportunity to give back.
How does it work?
- Choose an approved processor. Bring your harvest to one of the program’s participating meat processors across Maine.
- Decide how much to donate. You can donate a portion or all of your harvest. You only pay the processing fee for the meat you keep; the program covers the processing costs for the donated portion.
- Help feed your community. The processor coordinates with a local food pantry to distribute the donated meat to people in need.
This fall, consider sharing your harvest. A little extra meat in your freezer could make a meaningful difference for a Maine family.
